The Axum Obelisk, a 1,700 year old Ethiopian artifact, was taken to Rome in 1937 by Italian forces and later returned in 2005. The obelisk, also known as Stela 2, was looted during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia under Benito Mussolini. After years of negotiations and planning, the obelisk was returned to Ethiopia in three sections, with the final piece arriving in April 2005. The return was a significant event, with UNESCO playing a role in the re-installation plans.
Rebels control Addis Ababa 1991

Resettlement program in Asosa 1986
The Asosa resettlement program in 1986 was a component of the Ethiopian Derg regime's larger, forced "Emergency Resettlement" program, which relocated hundreds of thousands of people from the drought-stricken highlands to the lowland regions of western Ethiopia, including Asosa, to address food insecurity. This large-scale, poorly planned, and coercively implemented program resulted in devastating conditions, with high death rates from disease and starvation, environmental damage, and negative impacts on both settlers and host populations.

US sponsored peace talks between the Ethiopian government of the Derg regime and rebel lead by TPLF. The talks were intended to prevent a famine and a costly battle for the capital, Addis Ababa, but they did not take place as planned because the military government collapsed and the rebel forces captured the capital.
